Cross Country Ski Portrait

Cross Country ski racing is a tough sport and it takes a lot to succeed in the sport.  I have been fortunate to shoot at a number of World Championships, World Cups and earlier this year at the Winter Olympics.  Mostly fast moving action.

So it made a pleasant change when I recently caught up with Joey Burton, a member of Canada’s World Cup Academy and an emerging ski racer with his eye on the Canadian National Team and 2014 Olympics.

Sometimes it helps to break the rules, so I had Joey stand with his back to the sun with a snow canon blasting snow just behind him forming a moving cloud of a backdrop. I exposed for his skin so that his face wasn’t dark and in shadow.

It was bitterly cold so I worked quickly to ensure Joey wasn’t standing around getting cold, and managed to get him to stand out strongly against the blown-out background.
