Always great fun shooting with Alysson. Especially when there is coffee involved. Great smile. Lots of laughs. Hard to beat really.

2 becomes 5

September 24th, 2012 § 2 comments § permalink

Recently organised a quick photo shoot with 2 great girls: Jasmine and Laura. Things got a little out of control very quickly and we ended up with 5 models for the shoot. Enter Kendra, Madeleine and Opal. Not complaining. The girls had a lot of fun and we got some great images.

We found a lovely spot in the shade alongside a cool looking wall with amazing light. Simple direction to the girls. Crack a few jokes. Stand back and press the shutter. Life is good.

Thanks ladies.

The puzzle pieces of life

January 15th, 2012 § 0 comments § permalink

The New Year is always a time to set resolutions and also an opportunity to reflect on the past year.  Looking back on where I was 12 months ago I realise that a lot has changed.  Not suddenly but slowly over time.  Good changes.  Positive things.  So it’s an exciting time to look forward and imagine what life might be like and where I might be this time next year.

Things will change slowly and it’s a bit like putting a jigsaw puzzle together without knowing what the picture is.  366 pieces this year.  Makes it fun to get out of bed every day knowing that progress is being made and life will be different.

Happy and belated New Year wishes to all.

Dasha

Sometimes the subject is more interesting than the task at hand.  Enter Dasha Gaizova.  I spent more time sitting on the floor listening and talking to her than actually shooting.  Life for her growing up in Russia. Living on opposite sides during the Cold War.  The Berlin Wall.  Competing on the World Cup circuit.  Mutual friends and lots more besides.  Fascinating and fun.

Intriguing, articulate and one of Canada’s top cross country ski racers, Dasha is leaving shortly  to compete for her adopted country on the gruelling circuit in europe.

Super fun to sit down with her and take some images using window light.

Emily

Synchronicity. We had just received in the office a brand new and very bright pink town bike. Enter Emily wearing a pink t-shirt. Had to be done.

Lots of fun shooting into the low afternoon sunshine and capturing her hair blowing in the breeze.   And her wonderful youthful exuberance.

Alysson Infinity

October 1st, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

Always fun to go out and shoot with Alysson.  She is super relaxed in front of the camera and has a great range of expressions, plus we laugh a lot together.  We poked around in the industrial park looking for good backgrounds, and following the light trying to get Alysson out of the harsh sunlight.

At one point I was standing blocking the entrance of an industrial compound shooting away when a very large loader with a huge piece of  machinery on the back drove up.  I said I would get out of the way but the driver was very happy and reversed back out into the street and waited until we had finished.  Worth the wait I think.

Siri

I love looking at pictures. In magazines, on the web, photography books. I think it gives you an eye for good photography. I was looking at some classic black and white photos of the 60s model Twiggy recently. I loved the photos: simple, clean but stunning. It reminded me of this photo that I took of Siri some time ago.

The photo was one of the first I took that day while setting up the camera. Siri was relaxed, just hanging out while I messed with the camera. Available light.

I dug the picture out and converted it into black and white using Lightroom. Perhaps one of my favourite pictures…

Mélanie for Buff Headwear

June 26th, 2011 § 0 comments § permalink

Sometimes it is hard to find inspiration, wandering around in the rain with a bunch of camera gear and a pretty girl in tow looking for interesting shapes or backgrounds.  With Mélanie it wasn’t that hard.  She hails from Quebec, has an oh la la French accent, is pretty as they come, chatty and downright fun for a dirt-bag photog to hang out with for a few hours.

Simple.  Ignore the rain.  Find the light.  Fill the frame and throw the background out of focus.  Photography doesn’t get much simpler or more enjoyable than this.

Amee

Amee is very cool, and very funny.  I don’t think I have laughed so much during a photo shoot as I did with her.   She turned up for the shoot on her bike in the pouring rain, with her jeans soaking wet.  It didn’t faze her.

The first headshots were taken indoors using available light.  Due to the gloomy weather I had to push the ISO so that I could get a decent shutter speed even with a narrow depth of field.  The window light gives a really lovely light that wraps around her face.

Once we got outside we  had lots of fun with movement with Amee jumping and spinning and getting her gorgeous hair to do it’s own thing.  And always laughing.

Buff Headwear

May 5th, 2011 § 2 comments § permalink

Sometimes you just have to make do.  I shot some images for Buff Headwear yesterday…  It was sunny and too bright, only a brick wall and no open shade.  So I created some just on the models face.

Normally I use a diffuser which is a great piece of gear, but of course I didn’t have one with me.  So I used a Softbox on a stand to cast a shadow.  And the front of the softbox acted as a reflector to bounce a little fill light back into her face.

No more squinting.  Soft gorgeous look.
